Purvis Young

Purvis Young (1943–2010) was a self-taught American artist from Miami whose powerful, repetitive paintings and drawings explored themes of struggle, spirituality, urban life, and hope. Using found materials like scrap wood and cardboard, he created a raw, symbolic visual language rooted in the experiences of Black communities. Once working outside on the streets of Overtown, Young gained international recognition and is now regarded as a major figure in contemporary outsider and self-taught art.
